The Business Challenge
Abbott Laboratories took on the enormous challenge of implementing and deploying SAP across all divisions. Abbott needed to uncover, analyze, address, and resolve all the issues related to such a complex implementation. Historically, each division within Abbott Laboratories acted as an independent company when it came to specific business processes and system resources. The challenge was to establish a common foundation among all the divisions, integrate data from their legacy systems into SAP and customize the application as needed.
Why Notions Systems?
Abbott recognized Notions unique ability to integrate information using specific technologies without unnecessarily disrupting existing business processes. That knowledgebase minimized Abbott’s risk in this migration and allowed them to place more focus on the business issues related to their SAP conversion.
The Abbott Solution
In order to meet all the SAP data requirements, TrustedLink Enterprise (TLE) was selected to extract, transform and load the data. TLE preserved the business rules and logic required by SAP regardless of the data source. Notions developed a critical interface to parse the data into TLE, using an automation tool called WinRunner. This interface needed to be flexible and fault tolerant since different divisions had different data, data schemas.
The Results
An infrastructure is now in place to integrate the legacy data into the new SAP system. This infrastructure includes:
- Data parsers that can take a data field map and parse the data into usable data structures.
- An autoloader that allows multiple configuration environments to be loaded.
- Automation scripts to intelligently input the data into the TrustedLink application
- Logging to monitor any errors that may have occurred
Each division is now able to load their legacy data into the new system with minimal personnel time to monitor the migration. The infrastructure is flexible enough to respond to any unique divisional business requirements.
