Mobile and Wireless Benefits
Enterprise users want distributed access to their tools and data. Over the last three decades, IT departments have fulfilled this need progressively better with systems based on terminal/host, client/server and internet/intranet technologies. At the time of their respective introductions, these technologies granted evolutionary improvements in how users access and use their data and tools. These improvements are measured in terms of performance, user interface, depth and breadth of data, and robustness of toolsets. Mobile and Wireless is the next revolutionary technology in this chain, and it delivers two benefits never before available.
Mobile Computing
Today’s devices shrink a significant portion of the power and storage of a traditional desktop computer into a mobile form factor, from handhelds and smartphones to tablet and laptop computers. As they are used in the enterprise, mobile computing devices distribute computing power closer to the user’s need via low-cost hardware and software. The distribution of this computing power grants users greater control over how efficiently computing resources are used. The bottom line is the ability to leverage cheaper tools at more critical times and locations. (Also of note is the acceptance of mobile computing devices has followed the trail blazed by personal computers: their introduction with hobbyists, followed by wide acceptance by consumers, and finally being leveraged in the enterprise.)
Wireless Connectivity
Without connectivity, mobile computing would be a step backwards to independent computing resources and islands of data. Delivering wireless connectivity is the natural progression from wired Ethernet and Internet technologies. Wireless connectivity allows users to leverage existing computing resources while not being tethered to any particular location. The result is an accelerated information flow throughout the enterprise, enabling bottom impacts like productivity gains, improved customer and partner satisfaction, and visibility into supply chains, value chains, and cash flow.
